The Imperial Japanese Navy fleet submarine I-124
- was the first Japanese submarine sunk by the Royal Australian
Navy;
- was the first Japanese warship to sink Allied ships in WWII;
- is claimed to have held secret codes that were recovered by
American divers, thus providing an invaluable aid to the Allied
victory;
- may have held its doomed crew trapped inside after it was
sunk: did American divers hear a desperate tapping from within?
- has been the subject of suggestions that her hull holds
secrets about HMAS Sydney;
- was the subject of salvage claim during the 70's that led to
division, desperate deeds and eventually the Historic Shipwrecks
Act;
- has been said to hold a valuable ballast of mercury, and more
valuable treasures as well;
- still lies intact in the Timor Sea today.
This is I-124's story, and the story of her conqueror, the
corvette HMAS Deloraine; the many controversies and conflicts that
have been fought over her since;
- a glimpse into World War II fought in tropical seas;
- an insight into Darwin in 1942 as she was brought abruptly
into the conflict by tremendous bombing raids; an account of the
history of this curiously-designed minelaying submarine; a
portrait of
- attempted salvage, exploration down to a sunken wreck, and
finally a look into the hearts and minds of the many who have had
submarine I-124 as a major part of their lives.
