Welcome to the Rural and Remote Inpatient Service
of South Australia

The Rural & Remote Inpatient Service helps people who are mentally ill and who need the services provided by a specialist psychiatric inpatient unit at Glenside Hospital in Adelaide.

The Service treats consumers from rural and remote areas (voluntary and detained) through the function of a multidisciplinary team which is directed by a consultant psychiatrist. It also uses contemporary telecommunication and other technologies to provide expert advice and intervention in rural locations. The team through its assigned therapists assists consumers, their families and rural based healthcare professionals, including General Practitioners as much as possible to provide ongoing services and to maintain consumers following their inpatient stay.

The Inpatient Service also provides a link and liaison to specialised rehabilitation services in the metropolitan area if the primary object of immediate return to the community is not achievable. The Service also contributes to tertiary and post graduate teaching, research and advocacy to promote the development of programs designed to assist people with a mental condition to achieve optimal community function.
