Abstract :              The use of teleconferencing in acute psychiatric services is described. Scince 1994, telepsychiatry

services have been used variously but consistently to provide mental health care to

the inhabitants of rural  South Australia. From our own clinical experience, telepsychiatry

has proved to be an invaluable adjunct to primary care providers, as it allows them expeditious

access to specialised psychiatric opinion. The following case highlights some of the issues

pertinent to the use of video conferencing  in remote rural areas for emergency psychiatric

                               assessment.
