Parish Councils had meetings to discuss all aspects of the people who lived in
that parish. If you wished to move to another parish it was not a simple
case of packing up and moving! The parish you moved into first had to
make sure that you were self sufficient and would not be a drain on the people
of that parish by asking for funding for food or clothes. Permission had to be
sought first and if you were found in another parish without the appropriate
paperwork called Settlement Papers ,
you
were removed!
The
parish also assessed how much rates you paid by the number of windows in your
house.
Some
of these removal orders for families will be of no use to your research,
however, some of them are MAGIC! They not only show husband and wife, but also
their children. they also show where they had moved to and where they had come
from!
