USED IN GENEALOGY
WHEN FIRST STARTING TO CLIMB YOUR FAMILY TREE THERE ARE MANY OBSTACLES ALONG THE WAY, NOT THE LEAST BEING THE TERMINOLOGIES THAT ARE USED WHEN RESEARCHING YOUR FAMILIES HISTORY. DOCUMENTS MAY CONTAIN WORDS THAT YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF LET ALONE, KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH !! THIS PAGE IS TO ASSIST YOU IN YOUR QUEST. APPRENTICE.........LIKE TODAY, AN APPRENTICE SERVED A PERIOD OF FORMAL TRAINING WHICH REQUIRED REGISTRATION AND WAS USUALLY UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF A FULLY QUALIFIED PERSON IN THE SAME FIELD. BISHOPS TRANSCRIPTS AT THE END OF THE YEAR THE PRIEST OR PARISH CLERK WOULD COPY OUT THE REGISTERS OF BIRTH, DEATH AND MARRIAGES FOR THE YEAR AND HAND THEM TO THE BISHOP, ALONG WITH ALL THE PRIESTS HAND WRITTEN NOTES ALONGSIDE AND AT THE END OF THE ENTRIES, WHICH CAN MAKE FOR FASCINATING READING.. BOYD'S MARRIAGE INDEX IS A TYPESCRIPT INDEX OF ENGLISH MARRIAGES TAKEN FROM COPIES OF MARRIAGE REGISTERS, BISHOPS TRANSCRIPTS AND MARRIAGE LICENCES COVERING THE PERIOD 1538 TO 1837 FOR A LARGE NUMBER OF PARISHES. CRO cOUNTY RECORDS OFFICE WHERE CERTIFICATES AND OTHER DATA OR INFORMATION CAN BE OBTAINED FOR THAT COUNTY. CENSUSES IN ENGLAND CENSUSES STARTED IN 1801, HOWEVER, FOR GENEALOGICAL PURPOSES THE CENSUSES BETWEEN 1801 AND 1831 ARE NEXT TO USELESS FOR RESEARCHING EXCEPT IN EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES. THE 1841 CENSUS DOES GIVE NAMES AND AGES EXCEPT AGES ARE ROUNDED UP (or down)TO THE NEAREST 5 IN MOST INSTANCES ALTHOUGH CHILDREN UNDER 15 YEARS ARE RECORDED CORRECTLY. THE ? IS ASKED,WHERE YOU BORN IN THIS PARISH WITH A 'Y' FOR YES AND 'N' FOR NO. DISSENTERS/NON-CONFORMIST In England, the Church of England was not happily accepted by everyone. Nonconformist called themselves Baptist, Congregationalist, Independents, Presbyterians or Unitarians, The Methodist also known as the Wesleyan Church after their found John Wesley, originated in the second half of the 18th Century. Moravians were founded in London in the 1720s and still flourish today as attested to by myself who attended a Moravian Boarding School in Yorkshire! When you see more often than not "Marriage by Licence" within your family, they are more than likely dissenters, or non-conformist. GRD Genealogical Research Directory:A Book published Once Per Year by Keith A. Johnson and Malcolm R. Sainty. This contains data sent in by other researches re: the surname/s they are interested in alphabetical format A-Z from all over the world as well as lists of Societys and Organisations all over the world as well as addresses of Records offices, Archives and Libraries as well as One Name Study Groups. IGI The 'International Genealogical Index"An invaluable researchers 'tool' listing the Parish Baps and Marriages with some Births of ancestors dating back to around 1530s in some counties. Lists children if died under the age of 8 years, and the odd entry for an adult death. Compiled by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with their main Library in Salt Lake City in Utah, USA The IGI is now mostly on Fiche and can be read at LDS churches or now found on the internet. POOR LAW UNION RECORDS the Poor were the responsibility of their local parish. The Poor Law Unions formed from groups of parishes where the heads of the Unions and members of the groups kept records of the poor. The Poor Rate Book concerned the ratepayers who lived in the parishes and paid taxes to help support the poor. The other records concerned the poor people themselves like the workhouse records which listed the names of those that entered the workhouses and under what circumstances giving the date of admissions and departures, the state of their health. People who entered the workhouses were usually destitute or extremely poor. SETTLEMENT PAPERS Poor People who applied for relief from a parish had to prove that they were born in that parish. It was often found that people moved from parish to parish looking for work and it was necessary for the parish heads to qualify that the person was not going to be a burden on their parish for food and shelter. Settlement papers were given to the new parish head with sometimes a great deal of details about the person and his family wo wished to settle there. SOG Society of Genealogist: Has the largest collection of parish register copies and mountains of other information too numerous to mention here. THE PHILLIMORES ATLAS AND INDEX Another valuable resource tool for all researchers who are researching in England. Contains Maps of pre 1832 parishes as well as current day maps with information on the registers deposited from which year to which at the back of each map section TITHES A Church Tax for one tenth of the income, not exactly legal as it was not imposed by Parliament. Tithe Schedules can be found if available, still at the County Records Office
