Cremation:

What happens at the crematorium?

There are many stories of what people think happens at the crematorium. However we can assure you in Victoria each deceased person is cremated separately so that the ashes you receive from the crematorium really are  the cremated remains of the individual person, including the coffin, and whatever was in it. The nails or staples used in construction of the coffin that were not reduced to ashes are removed. and the remaining ash is reduced to fine particles and then placed in an urn. The ashes are then returned to Templestowe Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, or elsewhere in accordance with the wishes of the family; as indicated by the person authorizing the cremation and interment. As there is no crematorium at Templestowe Cemetery, the actual cremation is carried out at one of several crematoria. You can nominate a particular crematorium if you wish. These days, due to the distances and traffic involved, mourners do not always travel to the actual crematorium. If they do, the cremators are usually still some distance from the Crematorium Chapels.

More complete information about the cremation process is to be found on  Bunurong Cemetery's web site.
