Our History

We have been serving the community since we were established in 1858.

Templestowe Cemetery, Chapel and Memorial Gardens are in a beautiful, peaceful spot in the City of Manningham in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Templestowe Cemetery (and Memorial Gardens) was established after Mr. William Malcolm wrote on behalf of the Community in 1857 to the President of the Board of Land and Works recommending that a portion of ground be set aside as a cemetery.

A facsimile of his letter can been viewed here.

The Victoria Government Gazette entry listing the appointment of Sidney Ricardo, John O'Neil, William Malcolm, James Lacey and James Read as the Trustees of the "ground set apart" at Templestowe for a General Cemetery was published in the July 9 1858 edition.

You can view the entry here.

A short history of Templestowe Cemetery can be found here. The file, in PDF format, is quite large and may take a while to load if you have a slow connection.
