We didn't live in fear of home invasion, rape and robbery. We can live like that again. If we lock up the crims intead of our houses. Prisons should be punishment, retraining, reform and NOT "Hilton Class" accomodation costing tax payers $100,000 a year. Prisoners can WORK. That isn't SLAVE LABOUR. We have worked all of our lives. It did us no harm. Crims must WORK.</B></div> <div> <B>This prison in Maricopa County, Arizona is not a home-away-from-home where criminals can do their three years "Hard Tennis & TV" while costing taxpayers $100,000 per head per year. It is a bargain basement version.</B></div> <div> <B>Chief of Correctional Services Joe Arpaio built a prison using Army Surplus material from the Korean war. He purchased the tents, razor wire, steel posts, blankets, cutlery and crockery and had the jail birds build their own jail on-the-cheap.</B></div> <div> <B>There is no TV, sport or entertainment. Any films are training, educational or of social value. The prison clothes come from liquidation sales where unpopular products are sold at dump prices.</B></div> <div> <B>Joe got the pink jock shorts (pictured at right) for a few cents each at such a sale. The macho prisoners don't get a choice of colour.</B></div> <div> <B>The prisoners are fed wholesome food but cheap. Joe spends less that a dollar (Aus) per meal. Lunch for the day might be</B></div> <div> <B>meat-loaf sandwiches - no three course meals for criminals.</B></div> <div> <B>The temperature runs at 120 degree Farenheit in the daytime. Anyone who complains is told, The army boys are in Iraq where it is hotter. They have to wear body armour and uniforms. They did no crime. You did. If you don't want to serve the time then don't do the crime."</B></div> <div> <B>Ail prisoners are required to work. Some are contracted out. The prison is partially funded by their earnings. This is not slave labour, it is simply repaying a debt to society.</B></div> <div> <B>In Australia we have enough desert to accomodate our prisoners in the same luxurious conditions and we need roads, bridges, airports, dams, canals, tree planting and weed eradication. Those who can be trusted to do an honest day's work could get early release. Those that can't be taught need a bit more training.</B></div> <div> <B>This is what most thinking Australians want. Send this to your local member and ask him/her, "WHY NOT?"</B></div> <div> <B>We CAN Catch CRIMS</B></div> <div> <B>If it Is okay for police to hide with speed cameras then they can sit on the roof of a supermarket with a telephoto video camera and catch all the vandals and thieves who infest such car parks.</B></div> <div> <B>If it okay to have radar traps then we can have tiny radio transmitters inside regularly, easily stolen, vulnerable property. The radios activate and transmit when moved.</B></div> <div> <B>We can track the goods immediately (with a direction finder) and the thieves are caught red handed.</B></div> <div> <B>We can bug anything: Bicycles left unattended (not chained to a post), pumps, trailers, boats, outboards, fishing gear, crab pots, crash helmets etc.</B></div> <div> <B>Any vehicle left with the bonnet up on the side of a lonely road will soon lose its tyres. A transmitter in each tyre would soon identify and trap these road predators.</B></div> <div> <B>Where vandals regularly wreck phone booths a video camera/ recorder would soon indentify the culprit and solve the problem. Soon we could leave bikes anywhere.</B></div> <div> <B>When most honest men had a</B></div> <div> <B>22 cal rifle in the wardrobe there was almost no home invasion. That became fashionable after Howard's cronies stole our guns in the forced Buy Back.</B></div> <div> <B>Now only crims have guns and our old and young live in fear behind expensive locked security screens that provide little security against modem power tools.</B></div> <div> <B>Howard's action was in breach of the Bill of Rights 1686, which is an Enactment Continued in Force (in ail states and federally) by the Imperial Acts Application Act. Once in force - it cannot ever be removed.</B></div> <div> <B>The threats to cut State Funding was blackmail. Under the Crimes Act there is a penalty of two years' jail for coercing a politician's vote. dU? The offer of a Diesel Subsidy in exchange for the Nats agreeing to the Buy Back was bribery. Bribing a politician also carries a two year jail term.</B></div> <div> <B>I have a letter (On Parliamentary Letterhead) from a Tasmanian Senator saying they were BLACKMAILED into voting for the gun buy back so there are a few politicians who will join the thieves and vandals in Her Majesty's Prison.</B></div> <bR> <div> <B>Do gooders would have us believe that to make prisoners work, white they are in jail would constitute slave labour. I disagree. W» with grey hair have worked for over 50 years, it did us no harm. We didn't just do a 35 or 40 hour week either. It was called working-for-a-living.</B></div> <div> <B>Our criminolgists are, at best, clowns. None has ever looked at what works. One whack-on-the-bum with the Ratoon (cane) quickly cures vandals and gaffitt artists in Singapore. That works and it is cheap. The realty bad criminals can earn their keep.</B></div> <div> <B>The prisoners today do painting, leatherwork, pottery etc. all of the hobby crafts we pay to do if ever we get the time and money. These pursuits might be fun but they do not equip prisoners for fife in the twenty-first century.</B></div> <div> <B>Each crim costs $100,000 a year to keep. No amount of in-house work could pay their board and</B></div> <div> <B>supervision. We can have work camps for road gangs as easily as we can for non-criminal road gangs.</B></div> <div> <B>We can set up a Crim Camp and build the BradfiekJ Tunnel to turn some eastern seaboard rivers under the Great Divide to water and drought proof the inland.</B></div> <div> <B>We can clean up the Rubber Vine, Patterson's Curse, Ngura Burr and Groundsel!.</B></div> <div> <B>The inmates will soon team to be farmers, drillers, riggers, miners, electricians, plumbers, diesel mechanics, fitters-and-turners, air hydraulic technicians, become of use to the nation and earn some SELF RESPECT.</B></div> <div> <FONT SIZE="2" COLOR="#FFFFFF" FACE="Arial" ><B>"Force is all conquering, but Its victories are short lived,</B></FONT><B>1</B><B>' Abe Lincoln</B></div> <div> <B>National Interest Newspaper - Issue No.36 - Page 8</B></div> </td> </tr></table></body>
