Mud Crab (Scylla serrata)

Mud Crab (Scylla serrata) is also known as Mangrove Crab. It is commonly farmed in Southeast Asia.

There are three types of farming operation in practice:

  • Grow-out: Stocking crablets and grow them to market size (over 200g in weight).
  • Fattening: Collect the wild caught empty crab and grow them in short period of time and harvest for sale when they are full of meat.
  • Female crab fattening: Similar to the fattening, but only mature female are stocked and grown to the stage where the ovary is fully developed before harvesting for sale.

We sell Mud Crab(Scylla serrata) crablets as "CD10" (10 days old crab). A 10 days old crab is crab stage II to stage III depend on temperature. It is about 36 days from the hatching. At this stage its carapace width is around 7mm.

For long distance travel, we pack the "CD10" in oxygenated plastic bag with seawater and then box them in foam box with a bag of ice to keep them cool. We normally pack 1,000 -2,000 "CD10" per box depend on traveling time.

For short distance travel, we put "CD10" in a transporter tank fitted with oxygen or air supply and then truck them to the farm.
