| "The Neapolitan Mastiff is not a breed of dog but
rather a philosophy".
The Neapolitan Mastiff (also called Mastino Napoletano (Molossian)) is
amongst the oldest of Dog breeds. It originates from
around Naples, Italy. The breed today resembles their
forefathers which were used as gladiator hounds both in the arena and
battle and as guard dogs for the home. The Neapolitan is a massive dog,
powerfully built, strong and of majestic appearance and is often compared
to a lion.
The Mastino is not a normal dog in either appearance or nature.
He is a guard dog by breeding and is protective by nature, showing total
devotion to his owner and those creatures living within his
compound. He is not overactive, but can move with incredible
speed. You can never take the defender out of his nature but you can
make him more tolerable and easier to manage. The Neapolitan Mastiff
is not a breed for everyone and training and socialisation at a young age
are a must.
The Neapolitan Mastiff comes in various colours, the most common being
Grey (or Blue) which can vary from a charcoal to a very light hue.
Other colours such as Black and Mahogany are more rare and there is Tawny
which is a light fawn. All colours may also show brindling. |
Called the 'Teddy Bear' of the Cat world this breed has a
true rags to riches story. It is one of the oldest cat breeds, his
lineage going back to ancient times when the Romans travelled through
Europe and occupied Great Britain. He may have even been the origin
of several other breeds of cats later discovered in and around Great
Britain. His early history was that of a classic working cat,
exterminating rodents on his owner's farm. Of necessity these cats
were tough, heavy, robust and independent creatures. Today these
same qualities ensure that the British Shorthair remains a versatile,
placid, gentle and relatively 'bomb proof' companion - a perfect pet for
busy households.
The British Shorthair is one of the easiest of all cats to live
with. He will get on well with your other cats and dogs and is quite
resilient with children. He will rarely wander far from home,
preferring the creature comforts of your house, and you will seldom hear a
peep out of him - indeed his meow is little more than a 'chirp' - tiny for
such a large cat.
The dense but easy to groom jacket of the British Shorthair comes in a
comprehensive range of beautiful colours and coat patterns although the
most popular is undoubtedly the classic 'British Blue'. |
