Perhaps this should really be part of system-software update. I had an ATI Rage Fury Pro 128 (quite an old graphics card).
Anyway, there are serious problems with DVD playback, SuSE 9.1 and the ATI Rage Fury Pro. With XFree86 4.4.0 Release Candidate 2 (also known as one of the 4.3.99 series), video display using Xv does not work at all if DRI (Direct Rendering) is turned on. If DRI is turned off (through the options in /etc/X11/XF86Config or SaX2), the playback is still quite stuttery, much worse than with SuSE 8.2 and XFree86 4.3. The situation is not improved by turning on the ATI Rage Fury 128 option `DMAForXv' (this option can be turned on with SaX2).
I updated to X.org 6.7 series, which is based on XFree86 4.4.0 RC2, but without improvement. My understanding is that some of the Xv and Rage Fury Pro 128 problems are fixed in later versions of the XFree86 4.4.0 series, but SuSE RPMs are not available for newer versions of 4.4.0 at the time of writing. Anyway, until XFree86 works with my graphic card, I will not be using SuSE 9.1.
Incidentally, the WOLK kernel does not seem to install the Rage 128 DRM modules. I downloaded km_drm-6.7.0-2.1.i586.rpm from the SuSE X11 support site. The RPM installs into /usr/src/kernel-modules. `make modules' works fine, but unfortunately `make install' does not. It seems that the `Makeconfig' file in the WOLK kernel source tree does not support the option `modules_add'. I installed the modules anyway with...
