| Notes : Convict, transported to Australia in 1811 aboard the Admiral Gambier 2 with a sentence of 14 years. PRO HO 11/2 - Assizes 35/248. Convicted of robbery with John and George Maze 24 March 1808. They stole one hundred and sixty pounds of pork to the value of four pounds, two legs of pork to the value of eight shillings and two earthern dishes to the value of twelve pence. They were sentenced to death but Robert and George were given a reprieve - reported in the Bury and Norwich Post of 30 March 1808. John must have also been reprieved at some later date as he sailed with Robert on the Admiral Gambier and was recorded as age 66 in the 1828 Census. The Admiral Gambier 2 was a 501 ton ship which sailed on 12th May 1811 via Rio taking 140 days to arrive in Sydney on 29th September 1811. It carried 200 convicts with only 3 deaths occurring on the journey. 1811 he was assigned to John Campbell at Bringelly. 1814 Robert was still on rations and was indentured to JT Campbell Esq. 1816 Ticket of Leave was given. 1818 Conditional Pardon on 31st Janaury. CP no. 874 He then went to work for Thomas Wilford. 1824 Certificate of Freedom 29 Jan 1824 CF no 086/1783 1928 Robert was Free by Servitude working for WC Wentworth as an Overseer Assistant at Camden. 1832-1835 Robert was a Convict Overseer for Sydney Stephen at Murramarang. 1834 is the first year he is listed as being on his own property "Wickham Hill", Narrawallee. 1834 and 1835 he is listed as both Overseer and Farmer, from then on he listed as a Farmer. Thomas Wilford and Sydney Stephen prepared the petition for Robert's Land. 1853 he received the official notice of the land grant "Wickham Hill which he had been farming since 1834. This grant was for 300 acres costing 75 pounds. On the marriage register the couple both made their mark. An 1845 visit of Ann Jones to the Garrad farm is recorded in "Reminiscences of Ann Jones nee Thompson". "Next day we made for Garrett's farm. We stayed all night there. The Garretts are a worthy and hard working family, and their place is very clean. They gave us some food, making us a nice damper in a camp oven hanging over the fire. In this oven they cooked enerything. We had breakfast off a nice piece of steak, fresh butter and tea out of china cups and saucers. In one room I saw the floor covered with wheat. They were farmers and their house was a very singular one, built on a hill, the land all around them being low and flooded at times." The Jones visited again in 1848 - "I think we must have travelled thirty miles as we did not reach Garrett's till close on sundown, faint and weary eveyone, not having had a bite or a drink that day. When we reached Garrett's they had no meat, were cooking parrots, had been out all day for a beast to kill, but could not find one, so gave up the idea, as they thought it too hot to kill. Our appearance was hailed with pleasure, especially as we had pleanty of fish. They were soon prepared and we, with the whole of the Garrett family, sat down to an ample meal, all enjoying the fish immensely.......referering to blankets.... Mrs Garrett then said Put one or two of them down here, they will be quite safe on the verandah, I gave her 4... in the morning there were only two. I believe the old lady took them." (Comment - Sarah Garrad was only in her 40's ) ...notwithstanding she made bread and cakes to start the next morning. References: Milton-Ulladulla Directory 1820-1900. A.C. Skarrat. 1993.
