Images of Ancient Angkor

Siem Reap, a provincial town in central Cambodia, is the base from which to experience Angkor. The massive temple complex is a vast area with some of the most significant Hindu / Buddhist temples, rivalling the Pyramids, the Taj Mahal and Machu Pichu.

Many of the over 10 main temples were built by Khmer kings between the 10th - 13th century. The area is over 90 square km, and the temples were freed from the tropical jungle by French archaeologists in the 19th century.
After the recent devastating civil war it is now one of the most unspoilt discovery destinations in the world.
Tranquil village life has not changed much since ancient times. The tropical climate allows to grow a rich variety of crops. The wooden houses are built from teak and stand on posts allowing access by boat during flooding in the rainy season.
