Dugong Sightings to Date

Dugongs are regularly sited in the Rous Channel, Moreton and Amity Banks on the eastern side of Moreton Bay. During winter they are regularly sited at the entrance to the South Passage. On the western side of the Bay both the number of sightings and the animals seen are smaller. While up to 200 Dugongs have been regularly sighted in Rous Channel, usually only individuals are sited on the western side of Moreton Bay. We have had records of 200 - 250 Dugongs being sighted near Aquatic Paradise, Birkdale. However, generally it has been 1 - 3 Dugongs per sighting. These have been made near Wynnum Esplanade, off South Street, Thornlands, at the mouth of Hilliards Creek, Ormiston, Russell Island, Macleay Island and Coochiemudlo Island. Data received about Pumicestone passage also indicate this area is a very important Dugong habitat. The WPSQ Bayside Branch is very interested to know more about which areas on the western side of Moreton Bay the Dugongs are using.
