Order Casuariiformes

This group contains the cassowaries and emus, from Australia and New Guinea. They are large, flightless birds with small wings and an unkeeled sternum. They have long, hair-like feathers with long aftershaft, and heavy legs with three toes. Latin: casuarius, cassowary + forma, shape. (Dorit et al, 1991)
