Subphylum Cephalochordata

This group contains the lancelets, which are small, fish-shaped invertebrates. They are segmented, but have no vertebrae, brain or anterior array of sense organs. They are jawless filter feeders. There are about 45 species. Greek: kephale, head + chorde, cord. (Dorit et al, 1991)
