Class Cephalopoda

This group of about 400 species of molluscs includes nautiluses, cuttlefishes, squids and octopods. They are all marine species, and most are free swimming. The foot is divided into arm or tentacles. The shell is chambered. The living animal lives in the most recent chamber. Greek: kephale, head + pous, foot. (Dorit et al, 1991)
