Order Galliformes

This order contains the grouse, quails, partridges, pheasants, turkeys and chickens. Found worldwide, they are seed- and plant-eating birds. Largely ground-dwelling birds, they have a short, stout bill, heavy feet with strong short claws, and are adapted for running and scratching in the ground. Wings relatively short, and they are often sexually dimorphic. Latin: gallus, rooster + forma, shape. shape. (Dorit et al, 1991)
