Class Oligochaeta

These are freshwater annelids, and the terrestrial species known as earthworms. There are about 2,400 species. They are hermaphroditic. The epidermis of some segments is modified for the secretion of a cocoon. Greek: oligos, few + chaite, hair. (Dorit et al, 1991)
