Class Polyplacophora

This group, also called Amphineura, contains the chitons, a group of about 650 marine species with a dorsoventrally flattened body. The shell consists of eight overlapping plates. Greek: polys, many + plax, plate + pherein, to bear. (Dorit et al, 1991)
