The Pipe Organ in St. Paul's Anglican Church, Ipswich

The Organ from the Nave

The J.W.Walker organ was first installed on the floor of the southern (liturgical northern) transept in 1860. It was shifted to a new gallery in the opposite transept in 1974. While the original cone-pallet chests were retained, the action was electrified, the Pedalboard enlarged, and a new Choir Organ added, with the resulting specification:

Although a complete restoration of this instrument is planned, in 1999 it became evident that the Great was so badly warped and split that new soundboards were imperative. The proposed resumption of a mechanical action was deferred until relocation of the entire instrument. The slider soundboards constructed of marine ply and mahogany, with aluminium pallets and Pertinax slides, will be more stable throughout the expected lifetime of the instrument.

Other departments still as above. The additional pipework was voiced by Simon to complement the existing Walker pipework which is now restored to its former sound and glory. Simon made the Mixture and Seventeenth in the Fincham workshops in Melbourne. This work has relocated all the original Great pipework back onto the Great and on to a slider soundboard. The 1912 cone-pallet soundboard was showing signs of damage due to the extreme temperatures in the loft (in excess of 42 degrees Celsius in summer). The soundboard is fitted with electric pull-down magnets and is ready for mechanical action. It is planned to relocate the instrument to ground level in the southern transept. The Choir organ will be removed. The proposed showfront is based on the original design, bringing the instrument back into its true lineage.
