1 John Harris, snr born in England, c 1758; married Elizabeth Pilditch on 6/03/1788 at South Milton Devon UK; died South Milton Devon UK 14/06/1847; PLACE OF BAPTISM: England; DATE OF BURIAL: 16/06/1847; PLACE OF BURIAL: South Milton Devon UK; OCCUPATION: Carpenter; Witnesses at the wedding of John and Elizabeth Pilditch were Edward Muchamore and Jonathon Pilditch.
John died at 10am on the 14/6/1847 at Trutes, South Milton at the age of 89 years. Agnes Luckham was present at his death. Possibly Agnes was a family member, however his daughter Agnes married Robert Winsor. At the death of his wife some seven years earlier Jenny Luckham was present, and John and his wife also had a daughter of that name. Whether the two daughters therefore married into the same family is possible, although it is believed that Jenny married into the Moore family and Agnes into the Winsor family.
Truites in 1841 was a property owned by a William Roope Ilbert esq, and occupied in that year by a William Steer. The property consisted of a cottage and courtlage, garden and orchard. It was at the same property that his wife had died.
On the 1841 census John was living with a Windsor family, into which one of his daughters had married. In the house next door were a Luckham family. Full details of the census appear later.
Other property that the Harris family were associated with from the 1760s were Cliff Ground at South Milton, nos 554 to 561,41 parable and arable acres, a Harris tenement owned by William Roope Ilbert, and occupied by Sarah Moore in 1841(comprised of Orchard and Linhay, Cottage and garden), and Sweets (9 lots, 19 acres and house.)
Whether the lessees of these properties were this particular Harris family have yet to be proven, however it seems likely as even in 1850 there were only some 450 people living there.
At the time of 1850, when a business directory was prepared, some of the families associated or related to the Harris family were included, namely:
Back in those times Truites consisted of two cottages, one up and one down, with a garden and stream facing the property, higher ground behind it.
The Ilberts who owned the Sweets property had a long association with the area. The most important house near Kingsbridge is Bowringsleigh, in the parish of West Alvington. What you see now from the plunging lane on its eastern boundary is a beautiful Tudor and Jacobean house silvery grey amongst the oaks, and beeches of its park and startlingly large after the modest size of the Kingsbridge town houses.
It is a very ancient site, long established even when the Bowrings were living here in 1332. The owner in the 1960s was a Miss Marjorie Ilbert, descendant from the family who bought the house in 1696.
Various additions were made up to the 1850s in accord with the existing style. Possibly John Harris was employed as a carpenter on these. The oldest surviving part of the house is the chapel, which contains a curiosity in the roodscreen, originally in the South Huish church but transferred to the house when the church fell into decay.
Johns son Richard, was baptised in the church in 1804.
The Luckham family similarly has a strong association with the area. Luckhams lane joins the Malborough to Kingsbridge road a hundred yards north of the Malborough cross roads where a tollgate existed, the toll being collected from the window of the last house on the right from Kingsbridge. Luckhams lane was known as the dodge, for people sneaked up it to avoid paying the Toll.

10 ix. William Harris, snr born in Salcombe Devon UK, c 1806; DATE OF BAPTISM: 10/05/1806; PLACE OF BAPTISM: Salcombe Devon UK;
I do not believe that William is a son of John Harris and Elizabeth Pilditch, but rather that his parents were another John Harris and Elizabeth Jarvis. That family also went to the Channel Islands at about the same time as John and Elizabeth Pilditch. The John Harris that married Elizabeth Jarvis came from Malborough.
4 John Harris, jnr born in South Milton Devon UK, 00/00/1793; married (1) Mary Anne Humble at England; married (2) Elizabeth Foot on 8/09/1851 at Alderney Channel Islands; died Bouet Guernsey Ch Is 10/06/1862; DATE OF BAPTISM: 21/07/1793; PLACE OF BAPTISM: South Milton Devon UK; DATE OF BURIAL: 16/06/1862; PLACE OF BURIAL: St John's Bouet Guernsey Ch Is; OCCUPATION: Carpenter;
John lived at the following addresses :The question that can be asked is whether John Harris was the first of the family to go to the island or had they been there for some time before. certainly there were Harris folk on the island in the 1500s (Under the name of Henry). One interesting account of the Harris family in the area occurred in the summer of 1780/81 when three French privateers , two brigs and one cutter , with 20 soldiers on board were despatched from Cherbourg to take the island of Alderney. Under cover of night, the privateers came to anchor within musket shot of the guard house of the chateau a L'etoc, where they were perceived about 2am, it being at that time moonlight. There being very little wind the French were trying to land in Corblets Bay. The militia guard was only comprised of four men, namely John Ozard, Peter Gaudion, WILLIAM HARRIS, and another, who perceiving the object of the invaders immediately opened fire on them, killing several of them.
There was at that time, in Alderney Harbour a large English privateer who upon hearing the sound of gun fire instantly beat to arms. The weather being balmy, and everything being quite, meant that the alarm was heard by the French and they beat a hasty retreat.
There is the possibility that John also had a daughter Sarah. A Sarah Jeans appears as a sponsor , together with Richard Harris and Mary Ann Begg on the baptism registration at the Town church in St Peter Port for the baptism of Richard and Marys child Edith Esther Begg Harris on the 21/2/1861. A Sarah Harris appears as a sponsor with Richard Harris and his sister Eliza at the baptism of their sister Elizabeth Harris on the 8/5/1842 at St Sampsons, Guernsey.
The death of a Mrs Sarah Jeans in Pau France, a popular holiday spot in those times, was recorded on the 15/10/1878, and recorded in the Guernsey magazine March 1878/May 1879. Possibly Sarah was one of the older children of John, she was not recorded with the family at the time of the 1841 census.
John was buried at St Johns, Bouet, where he resided, on June the 16th at the age of 69 years.

His brother Richard was born there (Portsea) in 1831.There is baptism of a William Harris recorded at St Marys, Portsea Portsmouth, Hampshire on the 4th of July, 1834 to a John and Mary Harris. John was shown as a bricklayer, a trade with which he had not previously been identified, and in view of this there must be some doubt about whether this is the right William. There is also the difference of some 8 years in the dates(understood) between birth and baptism.

The Town Hospital records show that Richard was admitted on the 28th of January, 1879 by reason of infirmity, discharged on the 14th of October, 1881, at the age of 77, by the Committee, At his admittance he advised that he had been in the islands for 25 years and that he was the son of John and Elizabeth Pilditch. Constable Carey admitted him. He indicated that his parents were of Plymouth, no evidence has yet been found of his parents being there. On the 11/10/1884 he was again admitted at the age of 80, with rheumatism, again by order of Constable Carey.As stated earlier, he died in the hospital, as a poor inmate, at half past four in the morning on the 27th of August, 1888.

Richard, age 44, along with his wife Mary Ann, of the same age, and their children, Bertha, 8, Arthur 6, Flora 4, Aubrey John 18, Mary Ann 15, Edith 14, Isabella 12, and Richard William Francis Harris 21, all migrated to Australia.
The Scottish Lassie departed from Plymouth on the 12/10/1877 and arrived at Semaphore on the 01/01/1878, with arrival at Port Adelaide on the tenth of January. Passenger list number 78/1 gives the details. Aubrey John and Richard William travelled together on the ship, separate from the rest of the family.
They all received free passages, all were recorded as being of English birth and the father, ie Richard was recorded as a labourer. The voyage application number was 366, and under a separate application number 362, was a separate family by the name of Harris, a William age 27, Julia age 20 and their daughter Ellen, age 1. No family tie up has been established.
On the voyage out there were three births and two deaths, the deaths being recorded as of chronic diarreah.
The ship the Scottish Lassie was an iron barque, McIlwraith and McEachaun being the shipping agents. The ship was built in 1877 and was of 1899 gross tons. The builders of the ship were Hall and Co of Aberdeen. In 1895 the ship was sold to France and renamed as the Alexander. the vessel was employed in the carrying of emigrants until 1880, after that it continued to trade to Australia for wool and primary produce. In 1880 steamers became more popular for transport of people. In 1925 the ship was broken up under the name of Le Galion.
It is believed that Richard and his family initially lived at Portland Estate before moving to Queen Street, Alberton. Richard died within six months of arrival in the country.
In leaving Guernsey, the family broke a 38year association with the islands of the English channel. The history of the Islands are well documented and have their place in history. The famous author Victor Hugo lived there, in Guernsey, in religious exile from France in the 1800s and wrote several of his novels there, including "Toilers of the Sea". Interesting extracts from the novel include :
In Guernsey at the time of the 1861 census Richard, his wife and children, R W F Harris, Aubrey and Esther Garood were residing at no 22 Beauregard Lane in St Peter Port. Richard was listed as a seaman, and his son Richard William Francis as a blockmaker.
Richard’s death was due to meningitis, the informant was Charles Witcombe, Cabinet maker, Adelaide and the Assistant Registrar was Jonah Witcombe of Adelaide.
Back in Guernsey Richard and his family moved around a lot, each child being born at a different location. Refer his children’s history for details.
His birth is believed to have occurred in Portsea, where his father went looking for work. His baptism is recorded in the Orange Street Church, with his mother listed as Maria.
