The HUGH HARRIS'S of AVETON GIFFORD

There are a number of Hugh Harris's recorded at Aveton Gifford from the 1600s on that makes it very confusing to follow family threads through. The following is one part of the family that was sorted out, in conjunction with other researchers, using parish records as the basis. This particular family is believed to be a branch of my own family that lived at Stodbury, and then moved to other parts of Devon before migrating to the Channel Islands and Australia.

Hugh Harris Senior of Stodbury born c 1620, married Joane. He died 1680, his wife died 1682

Hugh Harris born c1645 was the son of Hugh and Joane.

The Hugh of c1645 had brothers and sisters as under:

• Benjamin 1661-1725
• Thomas born 1657
• Sarah 1664 -1709

Hugh Harris of c 1645 married Elizabeth Cole in 1667

Hugh Harris son of Hugh and Elizabeth born c1667.

The Hugh who was born in 1667 had brothers and sisters

• Arthur 1678/1703, a weaver who married Wilmot Bound in 1700 and had one child Wilmot in 1701. When Arthur died Wilmot Bound remarried in 1706.
• Elizabeth born 1680, died 1683
• Jane born 1691, married in 1718 to Peter Winter
• Joan born 1692, died 1742
• George born1696. George married Grace and had children Hugh 1740, Eizabeth 1741, Dorothy 1742, Jane 1743, George 1748, and Thomas 1749
• Sarah born 1699, died 1709
• Thomas born 1701
• Dorothy born and died 1701
• Dorothy born 1704. Dorothy had an illegitimate daughter Dorothy in 1731 and the mother then apparently died.

Hugh Harris born c1667 married Mary Hoxt in Aveton Gifford in 1703. 

Hugh Harris son of Hugh and Mary Hoxt was born in 1710

Other children of Hugh and Mary were

• Joan born 1703, died 1704
• Hugh born and died 1705
• John born 1707 died 1737,
• Elizabeth born 1714 and married to Thomas Lake in 1746.

The Hugh born in 1710  married Joan Cole in 1736 (2/11/1736). Joan died in 1741 (burial 30/5/1741),

Hugh then married Dorothy Winter in 1745 (4/12/1745)

Hugh son of Hugh and Dorothy born1749 (birth 5/12/1749) had brothers and sisters:

• Jane 1747 (baptism 12/11/1747),
• Dorothy 1752 (birth 20/6/1752),
• Joan 1755 (birth 21/12/1755),
• John 1758 (either 3/7/1758 or 3/12/1758) (he died in 1772 (buried 11/11/1772)
• Stephen in 1761 (birth 16/5/1761, baptism 29/5/1761). Stephen Harris married Ann Gaffs 17/7/1784. And had children
• Hugh born 1792 (baptised 1/4/1792) married Susan Ford at Dartmouth in 1816 and named his daughter as Ann Sussanna. Hugh died in 1856, his wife died in 1821. Both are buried at Loddiswell.
• John in 1785 ( baptised 22/5/1785)
• Ann in 1787 (baptised  18/10/1787)
• Mary in 1789 (baptised 6/2/1789).

The Hugh who was born in 1749 married Elizabeth Elliot in 1785 (7/8/1785), witnessed by his father Hugh.
