Archaeology of Space Exploration
Dr Alice Gorman is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of New England, Australia, and Co-Chair of the World Archaeological Congress Space Heritage Task Force. When Sputnik 1 was launched in 1957, the nature of space changed forever. Now, millions of satellites, spacecraft and pieces of "space junk" orbit the celestial bodies or rest on their surfaces. Interplanetary space has become a cultural landscape. Some of this material culture has high historical, social, political and scientific significance. Dr Alice Gorman's research investigates how best to protect these important cultural objects and places, within the constraints of space industry. |
